Money Saving Consumer Tip
Stay alert to the truly unique bargains being offered through various branches of the government. The Car Allowance Rebate System fondly referred to as ‘Cash for Clunkers’, is a prime example of opportunities never seen before and unlikely to be seen again. During the past week upwards of 240,000 vehicle sales were conducted through the program that gave owners rebates between $3,500 and $4,500 for older, gas guzzling vehicles traded in on newer, gas efficient models. By Friday, July 31st the original $1 billion budgeted for the program a week ago was gone and House members approved the measure 316-109 to add $2 billion within hours of hearing from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the program was running out of money. The Senate will be taking up the measure next week but the White House would not make any promises beyond the deals made this weekend. The hard hit auto dealerships are still processing paper work for more than 200,000 vehicles purchased as a result of this program. Although this is good for the environment as well as the auto industry it is not so good for the renewable energy loan program that the additional $2 billion was shifted from. The loan guarantees are a more long term program that is being looked to for future green-collar jobs. This past week, and maybe only for that week, an opportunity to make a needed purchase while utilizing one of the stimulus package rebates allowed an incredible number of consumers to make the most of their money. Stay abreast of what is being offered and use what you can to buy the things you need. Remember though that it is only a ‘bargain’ if it is something you were going to buy anyway. Anything else is really just an added expense.
