Finding ways to save money sometimes is simpler than one would think. Following are a few ways you can cut expenses almost immediately and save a couple of hundred dollars in a month. On August 29, Albert Gonzalez of Miami was charged with aggravated identity theft, wire fraud and conspiracy in federal courts in New York and Boston. The mastermind of one of the largest cases of identity theft in U.S. history plead guilty and will serve up to 25 years in federal prison for stealing more than 130 million credit and debit card account numbers. The 28 year old computer hacker pleads guilty to 19 counts in the combined two cases but still has pending charges in New Jersey to face. Gonzalez will forfeit over $1.65 million in cash, a condo in Miami, a 2006 BMW, a Tiffany diamond ring, and three Rolex watches among other things.

Javelin Strategy & Research center has been studying identity since 2004. Their new released 2009 study reveals that identity theft is on the rise with over 10 million victims in 2008. That represents a 22% increase from 2007. Victims spend less out of pocket due to zero liability fraud protection services being offered by their financial institutions. $500 is the mean cost per victim with some paying nothing. Low-tech ways for stealing personal information is still the most common used by identity thieves. Stolen wallets and physical paperwork account for 43% of all identity theft. Online methods account for only 11% of the identity theft committed. Federal Trade Commission complaint data has revealed credit card fraud is 26 % of the whole, Utilities fraud is when services are acquired by using children’s SS# and clean credit records comprises 18%, Bank fraud 17%, Employment fraud where someone without a legitimate SS# uses yours to get a job accounts for 12%, Loan fraud where someone applies for a loan in your name even when the SS# doesn’t match is 5%, Government fraud which includes tax, Social Security and driver license fraud 9 % and miscellaneous “other” types of identity theft comprise the other 13%. Americans are taking out identity theft insurance more often and that relieves them from dollar impact but the chore of untangling the damage done to your credit can take up to 5 years.
